FAQ
What is Carbon Offsetting?
This is where CO2 is either prevented from being released into the atmosphere or is some how absorbed from the atmosphere. There are many ways of doing this but one of the most common ways is to plant trees. Trees breathe in CO2 and breathe out Oxygen so are very good ways to offset carbon emissions. The process of absorbing carbon from the atmosphere is called ′Sequestering′. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Why do we Carbon Offset?
Driving a car, using electricity and turning on your heating all require carbon based fuel to be burned. As the carbon burns it combines with the air to form Carbon Dioxide also known as CO2. This is the gas being emitted that countries are desperately trying to reduce as it is believed to cause the planet to warm up. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
What is a Renewable Source or energy supply?
A renewable electricity supply comes from a power station that does not use fuel. Fuel stores will eventually run out so are not renewable. Wood can be used as fuel in biomass equipment but this is still considered renewable as trees can be replanted and restored in the relative short term. Oil, coal, gas and nuclear material can all be exhausted without being able to be replaced for millennia. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
How is my electricity supplier switched?
On hitting the Switch button an email will be sent straight to us and to the energy company you have chosen. They will then call you to confirm your details and proceed with switching you to their supply. Your old electricity supplier is contacted by your new supplier so you should not need to cancel anything. If you have any problems contact your new supplier first. If you still have problems we will be happy to speak to them on your behalf as well. We keep a record of all the switch requests so that if you are unhappy with any part of the service we can follow up any complaints or suggestions on your behalf. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
How long does it take to switch supplier?
The industry standard for switching electricity is up to 28 days. The energy company you select will contact your existing supplier on your behalf to inform them of the switch. Your existing supplier does have the right to object to your switching in which case the process could take months. The only valid reasons to object are if your contract does not permit you to switch for a given amount of time or if you owe the supplier money. If you have any problems let us know so that we can help rectify the problem and ensure it doesn't happen again. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
How does a Ground Source Heat Pump work?
The ground source heat pump consists of a long pipe filled with a mixture of water and anti freeze which is connected to a pump. The pipe is buried in the ground near to your house. Over the warmer months the soil absorbs heat from the sun and holds it all through the winter. The water solution absorbs heat as it is pumped through the ground. This heat is then transferred through a compressor into your home. Think of the pipe as collecting lots of little bits of heat from the soil and the compressor as a box cramming it together to create something hot to heat your home. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
How does Biomass work?
Biomass heating can be thought of simply as a highly efficient version of a wood burning fireplace. The heat is contained and distributed more efficiently than a typical fire place and requires less work from you to maintain. The larger systems tend to be stored out of view with an automatic feed hopper. You can then leave a fully loaded biomass heating system for weeks. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Which is the greenest tariff?
Unfortunately there is no objective answer; it's up to you to decide. By switching to any of the tariffs we support on GreenEnergySwitch.com you will be helping our environment. The smaller, lesser known companies are more committed to environmental support in one way because their energy mix proportions are more heavily weighted towards renewable supplies. The counter argument is that the larger companies, although their percentage is not as green, the shear scale of their energy production can mean that they may produce just the same quantity or more renewable energy than their smaller competitors. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Where do you get the Energy Mix data from?
Ofgem is a government funded organisation that the energy companies must submit their energy production information to. Under legislation the information they submit must be accurate and will be checked by Ofgem. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
